Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears Weekend Review
In a high quality QLD Cup game the Burleigh Bears were defeated 23-10 by the second placed North’s Devils and made qualifications for the finals go down to the wire. Burleigh has now surrendered third spot and finds itself in the position of having to beat the rampant Sunshine Coast Eagles (4th) in round 21 or the Northern Pride (5th)the following week to be assured of a spot in the top six. Burleigh will need to win at least 1 of their remaining 2 games of the year to secure a finals birth for the first time since 2005. Even then it may not be enough as is the closeness of the competition.
Burleigh was the more impressive of the 2 teams in the first half but could only go to the break at 6-6. With captain Scott Smith leading the way Burleigh were cutting North’s to pieces up the middle of the ruck. Brent McConnell set up the first try of the game up when he sliced through some lazy defence and turned the ball inside for Riley Brown to plant the ball under the posts.
Burleigh continued to build pressure but were unable to convert this to points. An example of this was when Burleigh flyer Adam Fielder was on the way for a try when he was ankle tapped by North’s back-rower Brendon Gibb.
With the scoreboard reading 6-6 early in the second half experienced North’s playmaker Shane Perry sliced through the Burleigh line to post the first points of the second half. This put the Devils in front for the first time 10-6.
Burleigh responded soon after with a try to big centre Chad Grintell after good lead up work by Richie Williams.
But North’s quickly regained the ascendancy in the 69th minute when Gibb steamed on to a short pass from Perry and off-loaded to Jack Reed in support.
Reed ran around under the posts for his second and it wasn’t long before Perry completed his double to extend the lead to 12.
Perry added a field goal to put the result well and truly out of Burleigh’s reach.
Nathan Ross, a late replacement for Nick Parfitt at fullback, scored a consolation try for the visitors.
Burleigh can take plenty out of this game and will be a threat for the 2010 Intrust Super Cup if they given
In a bleak day for Burleigh the FOGS Colts and A Grade teams went down 26-12 and 24-12 respectively.
Confident Bears Find Stability
COULD this be the year it all comes together for the Burleigh Bears?
After four years cut adrift from the Queensland Cup finals – including missing out by one place for the past two years – the Bears are on the verge of securing their place in this year’s Intrust Super Cup finals series.
Mathematically, they are even in with a chance of finishing the season as minor premiers, but such is the tightness of the competition, they are also in danger of tumbling out of the top six altogether.
“There is not too much pressure on us – we just have to keep doing what we are doing,” Burleigh coach Mark Gee said.
“We need to keep building momentum. We know that if we do get there (into the finals) – we have the ability to go deep into the finals.
“But if we don’t make it – we will just know that we weren’t good enough.”
This weekend, they will face off against the Norths Devils who were uncharacteristically flat in their 42-10 loss to the Sunshine Coast.
Gee is expecting the minor premiership contenders to bounce back hard in their game at Bishop Park this weekend, but said his team was confident they could claim the points going into the important game.
“We are feeling pretty confident; we have been playing some good football for the past few weeks, so we are going into each game feeling confident,” Gee said.
“We had the week off so we are starting to get back into it. The Norths game is our only focus at the moment.”
While players like last year’s Courier Mail Best and Fairest winner Scott Smith and veteran fullback Nick Parfitt can always be counted on to give their all for the team, Gee praised the work of his up-and-comers.
“Riley Brown has been good when he has played for us, and I think Dayne Weston (forward) has been outstanding this year,” Gee said.
“It was good to see him (rewarded with) rep selection this year.”
Despite an inauspicious start to the season where they played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in round one – Burleigh have been steadily moving their way up the ladder, led mostly by their enviable record in defence.
The Bears have also since found some spark in attack – as shown by their 40-30 victory over the Redcliffe Dolphins a fortnight ago.
“We knew our attack would take a bit of time to come to fruition – but it has started to come together in the past few weeks,” Gee said.
“But at the same time, our defence has fallen away a bit in the past month – so we will have to do some work on that.
“We know we will have to be good in both if we are to get to the finals.”
Another ingredient that is essential for creating a finals-bound outfit is a healthy dollop of self-belief, something Gee said is flourishing.
“For sure, we are going into each game confident of winning,” he said.
“We have some good stability at the moment and we have been able to maintain the 16 or 17 players on the field for the past few weeks.
“There is a good belief in the team and in the players at the moment.”
Slick Bears Pile On Points
The Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears remains on track for its first finals appearance since 2005 after overcoming the Redcliffe Dolphins 40-30 in Saturday’s round 19 Intrust Super Cup clash at Pizzey Park.
The Bears’ sweeping ball movement was the highlight of the entertaining clash, which featured 12 tries and 11 goals.
“The backs have really been stringing it together lately and it’s just a pleasure to play with them,” said Burleigh prop Martin Griese.
Redcliffe dropped a selection bombshell before kick-off by naming former junior Kiwi Jody Henry at halfback in place of Michael Roberts, who played in the FOGS Cup game.
Henry made a solid debut but the day clearly belonged to Burleigh halves Richie Williams and Brent McConnell.
The classy pair provided great service to the outside men who had a field day on the flanks.
Burleigh made its intentions clear early in the contest when quick hands provided the space for Jordan Atkins to cross in the ninth minute.
The Bears struck again soon after when Williams dished up a nice short ball to Tanu Wulf, who was never going to be stopped by an isolated Henry.
Redcliffe hit back with a determined solo effort from hooker Tom Butterfield, but the score line was starting to get away from the Dolphins after Adam Fielder and James Cameron put the finishing touches to more eye-catching play from the home team.
But much to the frustration of coach Mark Gee, the Bears let the Dolphins back into the game with a mistake from deep inside their own half.
Redcliffe responded through Butterfield, whose second close range try narrowed the margin to 22-12 at half-time.
The spring in the Dolphins’ steps had well and truly returned when recalled forward Palmer Wapau put Paul Ivan through a gap to score in the 50th minute.
Henry’s conversion left the Dolphins trailing by just four points.
However, the visitors were behind the eight ball again after conceding a try to Nick Parfitt.
Parfitt’s four pointer came from a wonderful exchange between Scott Smith and McConnell.
Spurred on by a vocal group of Burleigh supporters, the hungry Bears put the result beyond doubt a few minutes later when impressive interchange forward Brenton Lawrence steamrolled through the Redcliffe line.
Burleigh is now well placed for a shot at finals football, with one more win from their final three games likely to confirm the team’s position in the play-offs.
Redcliffe will drop out of the top six if the Sunshine Coast or Mackay Cutters win their respective round 19 games.
The FOGS A Grade team went down 26-8 against competition leaders Redcliffe. With more than half the team under 20 years of age and Redcliffe scoring 2 late tries the score did not reflect the closeness of the game.
The FOGS Colts were also beaten by Redcliffe but never stopped competing and with more hard work a win is not far away.
The Bycroft Cup saw Burleigh win the U19 and Reserve Grade games but the first grade team went down to Hinterland Storm.
Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears Extend Tigers' Pain
Burleigh continued their surge up the Entrust Super Cup table defeating East’s 36-24 at Langland’s Park on Saturday. The Bears moved into third place on the ladder with a comfortable win over East’s.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the early moments of the game with Isaac Kaufmann crossing to give them the lead.
But Burleigh showed why they have been near the top of the competition for much of the year when they responded soon after, first through Jordan Atkins who proved too elusive for the Tigers defenders and again through a powerful run from Jimmy Andersen.
The Bears had the better of the attack for much of the half, and the Tigers were forced to defend on their own line after conceding a number of line drop-outs.
Burleigh were then awarded a penalty, and from close range, Brad Baldry collected defenders like flies to sticking paper before managing to get the ball down to give his team an 18-6 lead.
With half-time approaching, they were in again from the kick-off, when Richie Williams put the ball down over the line after the Bears made a bust downfield.
But when it seemed like any possibility of the Tigers mounting a challenge was gone – the Tigers scored a last-gasp try after the half-time siren had sounded.
Burleigh had been awarded a penalty – but the ball found its way into the hands of the Tigers and Matthew Ruthenberg crossed to narrow the Bears’ lead to 22-12.
That try had obviously lifted the home side’s spirits, and the Tigers came out committed in the second half and their enthusiasm in defence caused the Bears to lose much of their previous structure in attack.
But after applying some sustained pressure on East’s line, the Tigers finally cracked and the Bearswere in again to open the scoring second half.
They didn't have to wait long for their second, when Williams chip ahaed had a favourable bounce for the Burleigh chasers and Aitkens went in for his second try of the afternoonand the result was assured for the Bears. The Tigers didn't drop their heads - although Liam Campbell did drop his pants on his way to scoring his firts two tries for the afternoon.
Burleigh will paly Redcliffe in Next Weeks TV Game at Pizzey Park
The FOGS A Grade clinical in defeating East's and cementing their spot in the top 5. The FOGS Colts who at one styage were down 28 - 0 showed some character winning their second half 24 -18 .
BYCROFT CUP
Burleigh had a bad day in the Bycroft Cup going down to Currumbin in all Three grades
Bears down Seagulls
A NATHAN Ross try five minutes from full-time helped secure the Burleigh Bears a 32-22 victory over the Tweed Heads Seagulls in their local derby clash at Pizzey Park yesterday.
Scores were level 22-22 before the former Seagull crossed to put his team in front, while Tanu Wulf cemented the result with only seconds remaining.
“There was nothing in it all day, both sides went tit-for-tat,” Burleigh coach Mark Gee said of the game.
“But I think we lifted a bit better than they did in the end.”
The result was built off the back of a strong performance from his forwards – with Gee reserving special praise for Man of the Match Dayne Weston who played a full 80 minutes. Weston and centre Steve Michaels have also been selected in the Country team to play City this weekend at Gympie.
“Dayne was really good for us – he played the full game which is almost unheard of these days and Riley Brown was also good, he had to fill a few roles and moved to the centres and did a great job,” Gee said.
The game also marked the early return of playmaker Brent McConnell who despite being sidelined with foot ligament damage – answered the call to replace Murray Emmerson.
“He played out of necessity,” Gee said. “He played injured, but he was good for us.”
The result not only shored up Burleigh’s spot in the top six, but it was also the first victory in the newly-established Titans Shield set up between the Gold Coast’s affiliated clubs; the Bears, Tweed Heads and the Ipswich Jets.
“It was the first win in the Shield, and the best performer between the clubs in our three games will win the Shield at the end of the season,” Gee said.
“It is something the clubs and the Titans thought up to add a bit more spice to our encounters.”
The Bears will use the upcoming bye round to rest and repair before preparing for a vital few weeks of football.
“The boys are looking to refresh because we have a big month of football ahead of us,” Gee said.
“We have all away games, so it is an important month for us.”
In the FOGS A Grade Burleigh proved to strong defeating Tweed 42-14 with Robert Apanui taking out the player of the match award. In the FOGS Colts match Burleigh pulled back an 18 point deficit to get within 2 points of Tweed but were eventually defeated 36-24. Jay Melrose took out the Player Players Award.
In the Bycroft Cup Burleigh defeated Parkwood in First and reserve Grade to continue their resurgence. Burleigh continue to lead the U19 competition after defeating Mudgeeraba.
Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears Game Preview
BURLEIGH BEARS v TWEED HEADS
The Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears face the prospect of dropping out of the top six for the first time this season ( if results go against Burleigh) if it loses to the Tweed in Sunday’s highly-anticipated local derby. It’s a situation the Bears are desperate to avoid and their entire focus this week has centred on the need to shut down the Tweed’s lethal attacking combinations. Tweed thrashed the North Devils last weekend to stay in touch with the top six. Their ability to score points from anywhere is a major concern for the Bears, although Burleigh isn’t short on firepower itself. Bears winger Nathan Ross scored four tries in Burleigh’s 28-26 loss to premiership front-runners Souths Logan last Sunday. Burleigh also has the better of the head to head battle, winning nine of the 15 previous matches against the Tweed.
Country Team
Congratulations to Steve Michaels and Dayne Weston on their selection in the Country team to take on City next week in Gympie.
ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL
BURLEIGH BEARS
THE ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL Burleigh Bears have gone done 28-26 to the competition leaders Souths Logan in a high quality game of Rugby League. With star playmakers Brent McConnell (foot) and Scott Smith (broken thumb) unavailable through injury Burleigh was always going to have to play at their best to defeat the Magpies and in the end both teams scored 5 tries apiece with goal kicking being the difference.
The Bears started the scoring with a great individual effort from fullback Nick Parfitt which he also converted. Souths hit back strongly though to score three unanswered tries in a disappointing ten minute period for the Bears
The Magpies led 18-10 at half-time thanks to a try to winger Nathan Ross just on half time. This was the first of what was to become four tries for the enigmatic number five. Souths maintained the lead for the rest of the game with Burleigh mounting a late charge in the second half to almost take the points.
Burleigh coach Mark Gee was relatively happy with his team’s performance and believes that if the Bears can repeat the form shown against the Magpies they will win the majority of their remaining games.
Kurt Sorensen did his best to lift the Bears with several dummy-half raids and speedster Nathan Ross didn’t miss a beat on the flank with four classic winger’s tries.
The loss drops the Bears back to 6th position and places even more emphasis on this weekend’s game against rivals Tweed who have finally found some form and consistency
Bears roll Wynnum
THE Burleigh Bears have returned to form at the best possible time, with their 20-6 victory over Wynnum Manly capping an emotional afternoon at Pizzey Park.
Wearing bright pink jerseys to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer, the Bears put two forgettable games behind them to score a reasonably comfortable round 12 Intrust Super Cup victory.
Along with supporting the ‘Pink Day’ promotion, the two teams played off for the Adam Watene Memorial Trophy.
In a tremendous show of unity and goodwill in the lead up to kick off, the opposing players marched on to the field side by side, with Watene’s proud children leading from the front.
Before his sudden passing in England, the highly respected Watene enjoyed strong stints with both the Bears and the Seagulls.
It was the Seagulls who made the early running in this clash with a brilliant exchange of short passes between Will Scanlan, Aoterangi Herangi and Jack Afamasaga paving the way for Matt Seamark to dart away for the opening try of the match in the eighth minute.
Seamark landed the easy conversion for a 6-0 advantage, but the visiting team’s lead didn’t last long.
A superb pass from Tanu Wulf and clever work from Steve Michaels and Germaine Paulson in support set up a rapid fire response from noted try-scorer Nick Parfitt.
Parfitt added the extras and later went on to kick a penalty goal to give the home team an 8-6 lead at half-time.
The opening 20 minutes of the second half was a tight affair until Paulson broke the game wide open when he combined with Michaels to score in the left corner.
Wynnum Manly looked to have hit straight back but the try was disallowed after the referee ruled Seamark was in front of the kicker.
Burleigh then put the result beyond doubt when Murray Emmerson showed great determination to chase down a grubber kick in the 73rd minute.
All Burleigh players gathered in the club after the game along with their supporters to assist in raising funds for the NBCF research charity. Approxiamately $11000 was raised between the auctions, raffles and donations. This amount along with the funds raised from Fridays Ladies luncheon will see close to $ 18500 donated to the NBCF. Congratulations to all those who kindly donated their time and money.
BURLEIGH BEARS 20 (Nick Parfitt, Germaine Paulson, Murray Emmerson tries; Nick Parfitt 4 goals) def WYNNUM MANLY 6 (Matt Seamark try; Matt Seamark goal) at Pizzey Park.
In the earlier games the Miami Tyres A Grade side suffered a rare defeat at the hands of a determined Wynnum side. Unfortunately an ordinary defensive effort allowed the Seagulls side to run out comfortable winners on the day. This loss will make the boys hell bent on rebounding when they take on Tweed Seagulls on June 20th at home. On a brighter note 10 A Grade players have been selected in the SEQ Kookaburras side to play in the QRL Divisional carnival at Burleigh this weekend. We wish Dennis Gordon, James Cameron, Perrin Miller, Blake Morrisson, Adam Lacey, Jamie Judge, Grant Purdon, Jason Bradfield, Sam Meskell, and Brad Baldry all the best in their quest for selection in the Qld Rangers side.
The All Signs Burleigh Colts put in an outstanding performance to defeat the high flying Wynnum side 40-14. This win allows the boys to stay in touch with the leading sides where only two points separates first and eighth. This win will surely give the team confidence to take on any side in their upcoming games.
In the Bycroft Cup games played against Ormeau at home on Sunday, the A Grade rebounded from a heavy loss the previous week to down the favoured Shearers team 46-34. After leading by 30 points at one stage the young Bears side dug deep to hold off a fast finishing opposition. Is was a credit to all players and coaching staff, lead by Ray Hubbard, to keep the boys positive after the previous heavy loss. Well done men you did the Bears proud.
In the early games the Reserve grade went down narrowly after some dubious refereeing decisions allowed Ormeau to score late for a 14-12 win. Whilst Jimmy Mahon and Frank Napoli’s Colts side went to the top of the table with a comprehensive 48-4 win.
Next week sees all Burleigh sides except the Qld Cup team with a bye. The ESSPRESSO ESSENTIAL Burleigh Bears travel to Davies Park to take on the top of the table Souths Magpies on Sunday at 2.00pm. Best of luck boys in what will be a great clash.
Rookies Shine For Magpies
SOUTHS Logan’s 28-26 victory over the Burleigh Bears yesterday has proved the Magpies can still be a major force in the Intrust Super Cup without its usual influx of Raiders NRL players.
With star fullback David Milne earning a Raiders recall and powerhouse utility Justin Carney remaining in Canberra because of family reasons, the Bears could sniff an opportunity against the competition leaders.
But the patched up Magpies outfit – which included debutants Simanu Crichton and Darcy Wright –united superbly to hold off the Bears.
The Magpies led 18-10 at half-time and did it reasonably comfortably in the second half.
Two late tries from Burleigh narrowed the final margin to two points right on full-time, but the Magpies were never in any real danger of losing.
Souths Logan coach Mark Beaumont was thrilled to give Colts back-rowers Crichton and Wright an opportunity in the top grade.
Wright had limited minutes but Crichton was super impressive.
“He went very well,” Beaumont said.
“He would have played a good 40 or 50 minutes. Both those kids got a bit of confidence out of that. At the back end of the season, you’re going to need those players when injuries set in.”
Prop Kieran Whalley produced another inspirational performance, winning the players’ player award.
The only bad news for the Magpies was a calf injury to Wade Liddell, who is likely to miss at least a month of football.
Burleigh has injury concerns of its own, with star playmakers Brent McConnell (foot) and Scott Smith (broken thumb) spectators yesterday.
Kurt Sorensen did his best to lift the Bears with several dummy-half raids and speedster Nathan Ross didn’t miss a beat on the flank with four classic winger’s tries.

SOUTHS LOGAN v BURLEIGH BEARS
Sunday, June 13 @ Davies Park, 2pm <
The ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL Burleigh Bears will look to record back to back wins against Top 3 sides when we take on the top of the table Souths Logan Magpies this Sunday. The boys are excited about the opportunity of taking on the form team of the Qld Cup after a confidence boosting 20-6 demolition of the previously 3rd placed Wynnum Seagulls last week.
Burleigh milestone man Nick Parfitt registers his 150th game in the Queensland Cup and his team mates are primed to make it a memorable occassion for the popular fullback. After a mixed 2009 season, Parfitt is getting back to the form that saw him become a regular in Queensland Country and Residents representative sides. Last week the former Bronco scored a try and kicked four goals in Burleigh’s 20-6 win over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls. Burleigh coach Mark Gee will now look for his side to show some consistency and produce a repeat 80 minute effort against a formidable Souths Logan team.
The Magpies have won a club record eight games in succession to lead the competition after 12 rounds. In a statistic that would please any coach, the Magpies completed their opening 19 sets against Norths last weekend. But they only completed one of their opening eight sets of the second half as the Devils stormed back into the game. Souths Logan eventually proved too strong, but their untidy start to the second half is a timely wake up call for the premiership front-runners.
The FOGS A Grade and Colts competitions, along with the Bycroft grades have a well earnt bye this weekend due to representative carnivals taking place. However Burleigh Bears players will play leading roles in both the SEQ Kookaburras and Gold Coast Vikings teams.
10 Burleigh Bears players will contest the Qld Divisional carnival held at Pizzey Park on Saturday and Sunday. Along with Nth Qld, Brisbane and Central Division the SEQ Kookaburras will compete from 4.00pm on Saturday and 12.00pm on Sunday in what will be a Gala weekend of rugby league.
Meanwhile on Wednesday night Burleigh junior Luke "sneaky" Hawkins will play in the curtain raiser to the State of Origin, when the Gold Coast Vikings take on the Illawarra team in the ARL divisional final. Good luck to all the Burleigh Bears players competing this weekend, including ex- Bears junior Ben Hannant next Wednesday night for the mighty Maroons.
Carnival Showcases Local Talent
Colleen Edwards

LEADING “local” footballers will be on show in the WIN Television QRL Divisional Championships on the Gold Coast this weekend.
It promises to be an exciting weekend of football at Pizzey Park, with players selected from numerous regional and suburban A Grade competitions taking part in the carnival, now in its 10th year.
In that time, the Northern Marlins have been the most dominant force in the competition, taking the honours five times and they will be defending their 2009 title this year.
They will be coached by Graham Murray in his last official role with the Northern Division before moving on to Wynnum Manly – and they will remain a big threat to other teams.
And a piece of history will be made when the newly-formed Central United team takes the field.
Made up of a combination from the former Central, South West and Wide Bay divisions, this will be the first time the team has played together.
Darryl Horstman is the man tasked with preparing the team.
“It will be a challenge, but I am really looking forward to it,” the Central United coach said.
“It will be the inaugural game for Central so we have a pretty big task ahead of us.
“We can set an example and we are pioneers in a way – we can set a standard that hopefully others will try and follow.”
Horstman has attended previous carnivals in the past, but thinks the depth of talent afforded to him in the new Division means they will be able to stay in the contest for the whole weekend.
“In previous years with the Capras – while we would win a few games, at the end of the day, some of those teams were not of the standard of other teams,” Horstman said.
“I think though, with this new format, the side will be able to compete for the whole weekend.”
The competition kicks off at 3pm on Saturday with the game between Central United and the South East Queensland Kookaburras.
The games will be played in two 35 minute halves, where a win will net teams three points, while a draw is worth 1.5. One point will be awarded for most points scored in each half.
At the conclusion of the carnival, the XXXX Queensland Rangers side to take on the New South Wales Country team in Bundaberg on Saturday, July 10, will be named.

ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL GAME PREVIEW
After snatching a vital win against the Ipswich Jets in the dying minutes last weekend, the Sunshine Coast finally has a bit of momentum to carry into a home clash. This match promises to be one of their toughest of the season, with the Bears full of confidence after a 32-12 drubbing of the previously unbeaten Norths Devils. Burleigh coach Mark Gee has named an unchanged team for Sunday’s clash. Spearheading his team’s assault is a formidable forward pack led by props Dayne Weston and Kale Burton. Weston grabbed two tries in the win over Norths, while giant second-rower Bodene Thompson also got in on the act with a try of his own. The Sunshine Coast have a powerful engine room as well, with last week’s match winner Terence Seu Seu to work behind his big pack of forwards from the key hooking role.
ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL GAME REVIEW
The Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears blasted the previously undefeated Norths Devils off the park with a convincing 32-12 victory in front of a strong crowd at Pizzey Park. The Bears forward pack dominated their opposition and laid the platform for the backs to do their stuff. Nick & Jemma Parfitt welcomed the birth of their first baby in the early hours of Sunday morning then Nick backed that up with a try and four goals to cap off a memorable day for the family. Dayne Weston grabbed a double and was one of the best on the field alongside his fellow front rowers Kale Burton and Brett O'Farrell.
The Burleigh defence was back to its ferocious best and not that dissimilar to the Bears of 2004. At times it was brutal and the line speed put paid to many a Norths attacking raid. The large crowd got right behind the team and this seemed to spur them onto greater heights and gave them a real lift. The Bears now have two tough away games at Sunshine Coast and Northern Pride respectively, so their defence will play a key role in these games.
Miami Tyres FOG's A Grade showed last weeks loss was a distant memory with a 28-4 victory over the Devils. With the added bonus of having Robert Apanui and Jimmy Andersen back from QLD Cup the team continued the good form they have been in for the majority of the season. Young Brody Ollard got his first start in A Grade and didn't let anybody down and he was ably backed up by Cook, Morrison and Emmerson..
FOG's Colts stepped upto the plate once again and recorded a strong 32-10 win to continue the rich vein of form that they are in. The front row pairing of Miliszewski and Keeping had their best games of the season and this allowed the likes of Anderson, Sorensen and Melrose to cause damage in attack. In saying that it was a great team effort and one that left coach Scott Cooke with a satisfied smile after the match.
ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL GAME PREVIEW
The Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears take on the top of the table Norths Devils in the Intrust Super Cup at Pizzey Park on Sunday. The Devils have been in fine form so far this season but will face a tough task against a Bears side keen on making amends for a disappointing loss against Redcliffe last weekend. Burleigh had their worst defensive game of the season against the Dolphins and they will be very keen to rectify that against North's. Burleigh need to win to stay in the top six and keep ahead of the chasing pack. Brett O'Farrell, Riley Brown, Dayne Weston and Matt Pow all had huge games against the Dolphins and they will be urging their troops on to give Norths their first defeat of the season.
It should also be a bumper crowd on Sunday with all of the Juniors from U6's through to U12's going to be there to do a march past as well as the Under 6's playing some games as well. Its always a great experience for juniors to come over the seniors and have a game and be a part of the day.
The FOG's A Grade suffered their first defeat against the Dolphins and will be looking to put that behind them with a strong game against the Devils. The Bears had be in good form until that game and Coach Shane O'Flanagan will be hoping it was a one off.
The Colts have been in good form of late and will be looking to continue that against Norths on Sunday. The young Colts have really started to gel of late and are starting to play with alot more confidence.
Look forward to seeing you at the Burleigh Bears on Sunday to watch three great games of football.
DAMIAN DRISCOLL NEW ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL BURLEIGH BEARS CEO
The Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears today announced Damian Driscoll as their new CEO replacing outgoing CEO Adrian Vowles. Driscoll will take over the role in mid June after finishing up with his current club Runaway Bay Seagulls.
Driscoll a former player with the West’s Magpies, Gold Coast Chargers and Manly, has been the Football Operations Manager for Runaway Bay Seagulls for the last five years. The fact that Damian has played and worked in Rugby League before played a big part in him securing the role.

Damian Driscoll was also excited about the new role. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Football Operations Manager of Runaway Bay and look forward to starting my new role with the Burleigh Bears in June”. “It is a strong club and the chance to work in the Intrust Super Cup was very appealing to me”.

ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL BURLEIGH BEARS GAME PREVIEW
The Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears take on the Redcliffe Dolphins at Dolphin Oval on Sunday. The Bears will be going to Redcliffe with plenty of confidence after disposing of Easts before the break. The Dolphins went down narrowly in their last game against the competition leaders Norths and will be hoping to make amends against Burleigh. Mark Gee has named a strong side and still has the services of both Bodene Thompson and Riley Brown, although Thompson is 18th man for the Titans and will play if any players pull up sore after the City Country match. The key for Burleigh this year has been their defence and the Bears boast the best defensive record in the Intrust Super Cup head coach Mark Gee will be emphasising the importance of that again this weekend against a side that boasts noted try scorer Ryan Cullen and the mercurial Mick Roberts. The Bears have been superbly lead up front by Kale Burton, Brett O'Farrell and Dayne Weston where not only have they been making the tough yards but they have been dominant in defence and making sure nothing comes through the middle.
There is a supporters bus going to Redcliffe, so if you want to see the Espresso Essential Burleigh Bears take on the Dolphins, ring reception to book a spot quickly as numbers are limited.
The FOG's A Grade will be again looking to continue their undefeated record against the Dolphins, with Coach Shane O'Flanagan having the luxury of picking Martin Griese in his side after the back rower makes his comeback from a hamstring injury. This makes up for the loss of Ayden Lee who makes his debut for the Titans Toyota Cup side against the Knights. Lee thoroughly deserves a shot in the Titans side and it won't be long before his back row partner Jesse Malcolm also joins him after also performing well in FOG's Cup.
The Colts are hoping to make it three on the trot on Sunday. The young Bears have started to hit some form and play some really good football and Scott Cooke will be hoping it continues against the Dolphins.
Bycroft Cup take on Hinterland Storm in all three grades at Pizzey Park on Sunday and Ray Hubbard will be hoping his young A Grade side claim their first scalp of the season.

Pride Breaks Burleigh Spirit
BURLEIGH’s freakish try in the second minute of Saturday’s Intrust Super Cup match suggested that it wasn’t going to be the Northern Pride’s night.
But the try, which came from what Pride coach David Maiden described as a “wobbly kick”, was the Bears’ last moment of joy in the fiery round 11 clash in Cairns.
The Pride went on to win the match 20-6 on the back of another strong performance from their formidable forward pack.
Maiden said his team defended stoutly, with Burleigh unable to penetrate after their early try to Nathan Ross.
“The defence for the rest of those 78 minutes was very good,” Maiden said.
The win was the Pride’s fifth of the year and will provide a strong launching pad for the Cairns club heading into the second half of the season.
Maiden believes his team is still a long way short of its best.
“We didn’t play that well but we’ll take the two points,” he said.
“I think all of our forwards put their hands up like they have done over the last couple of weeks. Dane Hogan was our players’ player.”
Ty Williams capitalised on the strong work from the Pride forwards with a timely two-try haul.
But it wasn’t a happy outing for Steve Michaels, who turned out for Burleigh for the first time this season after signing with the Gold Coast Titans.
Michaels has previously been playing with Broncos feeder team the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, but he is now required to play with a team aligned with the Titans in the wake of his NRL switch.
Michael’s inclusion was one of five changes to Burleigh’s team.
And coach Mark Gee may yet make more changes in the wake of another sluggish performance which could leave the Bears in danger of sliding out of the top six should they lose to Wynnum Manly next weekend.

ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL BEARS ROUND 11 CLASH
SOUTHS LOGAN v BURLEIGH BEARS
Sunday, June 13 @ Davies Park, 2pm
Burleigh milestone man Nick Parfitt registers his 150th game in the Queensland Cup. After a mixed 2009 season, Parfitt is getting back to the form that saw him become a regular in Country and Queensland Residents representative sides. In a statistic that would please any coach, the Magpies completed their opening 19 sets aga
But it wasn’t enough to stop the Bears from dropping their sixth game of the season and losing their grip on fifth spot

LEADING “local” footballers will be on show in the WIN Television QRL Divisional Championships on the Gold Coast this weekend.

But it wasn’t enough to stop the Bears from dropping their sixth game of the season and losing their grip on fifth spot
“We are excited to have Damian onboard with us and we look forward to working with him to help take the football club forward in the coming years”. “We had a number of good candidates apply but we felt that Damian was the right person for the role” said Burleigh Chairman Paul Khan
ESPRESSO ESSENTIAL SPONSORSHIP
Burleigh Bears CEO, Adrian Vowles, says “We welcome the Espresso Essential team onboard and know that it with give the club a real boost.” “We were without a naming rights sponsor this season and we have been lucky enough to form a 3 year partnership with Espresso Essential, who like us are a very progressive company.” “We hope that this partnership will have plenty to celebrate this year and beyond”
